Text
version of this story
Mild infections of the West Nile virus cause
flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, body aches, possibly
a skin rash on the trunk of the body and swollen lymph glands.
These cases typically last a few days.
A severe infection can produce headache,
high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors,
convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis. Symptoms may last
several weeks, although neurological effects may be permanent.
