Welcome to the Chemistry Program at SSU.
|
The Chemistry Program, a part of the Science Department with four faculty members, has been fully accredited by the American Chemical Society. Students at SSU have the opportunity to study chemistry in small classes with ample individual attention from the faculty. The program offers two degrees, the ACS-approved BS degree and a BA degree. In addition, a BS degree in Chemical Education leading to teaching licensure is offered in conjunction with the Education Department. The introductory and advanced courses in Chemistry also serve many other students, such as biology majors, pre-medical students, and environmental science majors. The instrumentation in Chemistry includes a 200-MHz High Resolution FT-NMR, FT-IR, a UV-visible spectrophotometer, GC, HPLC, AA, and an electrochemistry workstation. All of the equipment is available for students to use in their freshman and sophomore years. |

The Chemistry Club at SSU is one of the most active in the United States, and has received many national and local awards. Club activities include presenting chemical reaction shows, judging science fairs, conducting environmental testing, maintaining contacts with alumni, arranging for speakers, and holding numerous social events. In addition, each year the club organizes a trip to the national meeting of the American Chemical Society where students present the results of their research. Recent ACS trips have taken studentst to New Orleans, San Francisco, and Anaheim. |
