August 18, 2005, is the date of SMSU's Fall Convocation. The theme, "Where You Belong," refers not only to a physical place but also to place as a psychic concept and to one's "place" in work, culture, community, state, nation, and world.
The convocation speaker is Bart Sutter, an SMSU graduate and the only author to have won the Minnesota Book Award in three categories. Over the summer, incoming students received copies of essays selected from Cold Comfort, an award-winning book of essays by Sutter. A series of convocation-related events, including the Marshall Festival, will be held throughout the academic year.
