The Higher Learning Commission team visited Southwest Minnesota State University on February 2-4, 2004. In its exit session, the HLC team recommended a 10-year continued accreditation for Southwest Minnesota State University. The Higher Learning Commission Institutional Actions Council voted to continue the accreditation of Southwest Minnesota State Univeristy on June 14, 2004 and the Higher Learning Commission Board of Trustees validated that action through its validation process concluded on June 21, 2004.
