Outcome 2:  Communicate Effectively

Goal:

The overarching goal to tie effective communication, both oral and written, to critical thinking.

Thus, the basic standard becomes:  Students will present a written or oral project that fulfills the five goals of critical thinking.

1.  Their project has determined the nature and extent of the information needed and has accessed that information effectively and efficiently.

2.  Their project has interpreted arguments by correctly identifying the relevant premises and conclusions, as well as any key assumptions.

3.  Their project has evaluated evidence in terms of its relevance, accuracy, reasonableness, and sufficiency to support their claims.

4.  Their project has formulated clear, well-supported arguments.

5.  Their project exhibits a tone that engages in civil discourse, plus they have an attitude of self-reflection, willingness to examine another’s opinion, and thoughtful consideration of opposing points of view.

In addition, specific to the presentation of a written or oral statement, these outcomes apply:

6.  Students demonstrate the difference between argument and persuasion. 

7.  Students demonstrate information literacy by accessing, utilizing, formatting, citing, and documenting all relevant outside material correctly and accurately.

8.  Students demonstrate an understanding of audience and adhere to the standard methods for responding to the needs of that audience.

9.  Students demonstrate a confidence and comfort with presenting any material in either a written or spoken format.
